Effect of chitosan oral consumption on intestinal bacterial flora of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Authors

Abstract:

Rainbow trout is one of the most important breeding species in the world. The use of growth promoters, immune stimulants and prebiotics can improve the breeding efficiency of this fish. This study seeks to determine the prebiotic effects of chitosan in salmon. For this purpose, chitosan (1%, 0.5% and 0.25%) was added to the diet of rainbow trout with an average weight of 180g. After 150 days, the fish were examined for functional indices and the general population of bacteria and lactobacilli. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the treatment group with 0.25% and the control group in feed conversion ratio and specific growth coefficient (P<0.05). There was also a statistically significant difference between the treatment group and the control group in the total number of intestinal bacteria and lactobacilli (P<0.05). Accordingly, chitosan, especially at 0.25% dose, can be considered as a suitable prebiotic with significant effects on rainbow trout breeding and its use in the diet of this fish is recommended.

Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Rainbow trout are classified as Oncorhynchus mykiss, and as such belong to the same genus as Pacific salmon, and to the family Salmonidae, which includes Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), various trout (Salvelinus sp.), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) and whitefish (Coregonus sp.). Rainbow trout are native to areas around the North Pacific Ocean, from souther...

Modulation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestinal immune gene expression following bacterial challenge.

The mucosal immune systems of fishes are still poorly understood, and defined models for studying natural host-pathogen interactions are lacking. The objective of this study was to evaluate different challenge models and pathogens to examine the magnitude of change in intestinal immune gene expression. Rainbow trout were exposed by immersion to Yersinia ruckeri or by intraperitoneal injection w...

Effects of chitosan on hematological parameters and stress resistance in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of chitosan as immune stimulator on some hematological parameters and stress resistance in rainbow trout. Nine hundred rainbow trout (with initial body weight of 25 ± 0.1 g) were obtained from a local farm and acclimated to the laboratory conditions for one week. After that fish were randomly divided into four groups in three replicates. Each gro...

Effects of dietary selenomethionine on larval rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Increased selenium (Se) concentrations in water (>10 microg/L) have been measured in the San Diego Creek, which is a tributary of the Upper Newport Bay in Orange County, CA. The objective of this study was to develop tissue- and dietary-based thresholds for Se in resident fish species in San Diego Creek. A 90-day dietary experiment was conducted to determine the effects of seleno-L-methionine (...

Immersion vaccination of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against Flavobacterium psychrophilum

Flavobacterium psychrophilum is the causal agent of rainbow trout fry syndrome (RTFS), which seriously affects rainbow trout aquaculture. The disease affects fish at early life stage and can cause high mortality. Within trout aquaculture several procedures have been implemented in order to reduce the disease problem. Use of ”Flavo free” broodstock and disinfection of eggs can reduce probability...
